Kurt Schottenheimer
Secondary

21st season in NFL
Third season with Packers

Kurt Schottenheimer, a coaching veteran of 30 seasons, begins the second year of his second tenure with Green Bay as the Packers' secondary coach in 2007.

Named to his current position by Head Coach Mike McCarthy Jan. 31, 2006, the 57-year-old Schottenheimer previously served as the team's defensive backs coach in 2004. He also has worked with five other NFL teams.

A veteran of 20 years as an NFL coach, Schottenheimer oversaw a secondary that made continued progress. Much like the entire unit, second-year safety Nick Collins was among the individuals who finished the season strong and looked poised to become a legitimate playmaker for years to come.

Schottenheimer joined the Packers after spending 2005 with the St. Louis Rams. In St. Louis, he successfully converted Mike Furrey from wide receiver to free safety. Under Schottenheimer's tutelage, Furrey led the team in interceptions with four (one returned for a TD) and recovered one fumble.

In 2004, his first year with the Packers, he tutored safety Darren Sharper, who led the team with four interceptions (tied for 10th in the NFC), returning two for touchdowns.

Schottenheimer first came to the Packers after five seasons as an NFL defensive coordinator, with the Detroit Lions (2002-03), Washington Redskins (2001) and Kansas City Chiefs (1999-2000).

On Thanksgiving 2003, Schottenheimer's Detroit unit held the Packers to just 52 rushing yards in the Lions' 22-14 win. That marked the lowest 2003 output by Green Bay, whose rushing offense led the NFC and ranked third in the league, averaging 159.9 yards per game.

During his time as Kansas City's defensive backs coach (1995-98), the team allowed only 16.4 points per game, equaling the NFL's lowest mark. He also helped mold James Hasty and Dale Carter into perennial Pro Bowl players.

Schottenheimer began his 12-year tenure in Kansas City in 1989 as the club's special teams coach, a position he held through the 1994 season. He had begun his NFL coaching career in the same capacity in 1987, when he replaced Bill Cowher as the Cleveland Browns' special teams coach (1987-88).

Before entering the NFL, Schottenheimer worked 10 seasons in the college ranks. He served as linebackers coach at Notre Dame under Lou Holtz in 1986 after working in the same capacity for two years at Louisiana State (1984-85).

Prior to his tenure at LSU he was a defensive assistant at Tulane (1983) and Michigan State (1978-82) after getting his coaching start at William Patterson College in 1974.

A JUCO All-America quarterback at Coffeyville (Kan.) Junior College, he led the nation in passing as a sophomore in 1968. After shifting to defensive back, he started two seasons (1969-70) at the University of Miami (Fla.), where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1971.

Born in McDonald, Pa., Schottenheimer and his wife, Collen Duffey, live in Green Bay and have two daughters, Steele, 24, and Sloane, 21. He is the younger brother of former NFL head coach Marty Schottenheimer, whose son Brian (Kurt's nephew) is currently the Jets' offensive coordinator.
