P JON RYAN #9
6' 0" 222 lbs. University of Regina (Canada)

Exp: 3rd NFL Season, 3rd Packers Season
Age: 26
Acquired: Free Agent 2006
Current Status: Active Roster

  • Has posted the third (44.5 in 2006) and fourth-best (44.4 in 2007) single-season gross punting averages in team history
  • Improved his net average by almost two full yards (35.7 to 37.6) this past year, in part due to a change from a three-step approach to two-step
  • Boomed a career-long 72-yard punt, downed at the 1-yard line, in last year's regular-season finale vs. Detroit (Dec. 30)
  • Voted by his teammates as the recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award in 2006 for his display of courage and sportsmanship, and being an inspiration in the locker room
  • Found out in 2006 training camp his father, Bob, was diagnosed with terminal cancer and persevered through a tough season, which included punting in a game two days after his father's death
  • Spent two seasons in the CFL with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, setting a single-season CFL record with a 50.6-yard gross punting average, which included the league's longest punt that year of 80 yards
  • Has served as the team's holder the last two years for two different kickers. Now will hold for his second different snapper, with the retirement of Rob Davis
Pro Summary
  • A change from a three-step technique to a two-step approach produced better net results in his second season as Green Bay's punter
  • Nearly matched his 44.5-yard gross average from 2006 at 44.4 in 2007, but improved his net average by nearly two full yards, from 35.7 to 37.6 in his second year in the NFL
  • His gross averages rank third and fourth on the Packers' all-time single-season list
  • In those two years, has nine punts 60 yards or longer, including a career-long 72-yarder in the regular-season finale last year vs. Detroit (Dec. 30), which was downed at the 1-yard line
  • Needs just six punts to reach 150 and qualify for the Packers' all-time lead in gross punting average, currently held by Craig Hentrich at 42.8 (289 punts, 1994-97)
  • Signed by Green Bay as a reserve/future free agent on Feb. 1, 2006, won the punting job through mini-camps and training camp over incumbent B.J. Sander
  • Spent two years with the Canadian Football League's Winnipeg Blue Bombers and set a single-season CFL record for punting average (50.6) before signing with the Packers
  • Displayed tremendous mental toughness in a very trying first NFL season, finding out during training camp that his father, Bob, was diagnosed with terminal cancer
  • His dad, an avid Packers fan, was tremendously proud his son had earned the team's punting job and came to see him play at Lambeau Field twice, once in the preseason and again on a surprise visit Oct. 29, vs. Arizona
  • Shortly after a visit home to Canada to see his father, found out he passed away and still took the field to punt in that week's game vs. N.Y. Jets (Dec. 3), saying it never crossed his mind that he wouldn't play
  • Was voted by his teammates as the Packers' 2006 recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award, given for displaying commitments to the principles of courage and sportsmanship, while serving as inspirations in their locker rooms
  • Had never done so previously in his football life, but has acted as the team's holder, working flawlessly with two different kickers in his two seasons, and now moves on to his second snapper with the retirement of Rob Davis
2007 Season
  • Played in all 16 games as punter and holder and had 60 punts for a 44.4-yard gross average and a 37.6-yard net average, with 18 inside the 20
  • Gross average, fourth-best in Packers' history, ranked sixth in the NFC and net average seventh
  • His career-long 72-yard punt vs. Detroit (Dec. 30) tied him for sixth-longest in Packers annals
  • Changed from a three-step to a two-step approach in the offseason and saw immediate results
  • Vs. Philadelphia (Sept. 9), punted seven times for 286 yards (39.1-yard net); pulled down a high snap and placed the ball perfectly, for what would be a 42-yard, game-winner by Mason Crosby with two seconds left on the clock
  • Vs. San Diego (Sept. 23), punted three times for 132 yards, all inside the 20 (44.0-yard average, 43.0 net)
  • At Minnesota (Sept. 30), punted four times for 196 yards (49.0-yard average, 44.3 net). Turned a second-quarter fake punt on fourth-and-4 into a 7-yard run, starting right and then reversing field, dodging defenders for extra yards; the drive ended with a field goal and a 13-6 Green Bay lead. His first punt of the game sailed 58 yards (touchback). Later in the first quarter, booted a 51-yard punt; Jarrett Bush tackled PR Bobby Wade for a 1-yard loss. In the third quarter, punted a 54-yarder to the Minnesota 7-yard line, where Will Blackmon downed it
  • Vs. Chicago (Oct. 7), had five punts for 240 yards (48.0-yard average, 40.0 net), including punts of 64 and 59 yards
  • At Kansas City (Nov. 4), punted twice for 115 yards and an impressive 50.5 net, with both attempts landing inside the 20; launched a 59-yard punt in the second quarter
  • Vs. Carolina (Nov. 18), three of his four punts went inside the 20
  • At Dallas (Nov. 29), had three punts for 149 yards (49.7-yard average, 46.3 net); in the second quarter, recorded a 57-yard punt that was downed at the Dallas 4-yard line
  • Vs. Detroit (Dec. 30), had four punts for 196 yards (49.0 average, career-best 49.0 net), with two inside the 20. In the fourth quarter, boomed a career-long 72-yard punt, downed by Bush at the 1-yard line; the Lions went three-and-out on the ensuing drive
  • Played in both playoff games
  • Vs. Seattle (Jan. 12), punted three times for 105 yards, with one punt inside the 20
  • Had two punts inside the 20 in the NFC Championship Game vs. the New York Giants (Jan. 20)
2006 Season
  • In his first NFL season, played in all 16 games, punting 84 times for a 44.5-yard gross average - the third-best single-season mark in team annals, and ninth in the '06 league rankings - with 17 punts inside the 20
  • Also completed a pass, his first since college
  • Showed his potential with a 69-yard punt in the preseason finale vs. Tennessee (Sept. 1), the NFC's longest preseason punt, and followed that up by averaging 45.0 yards on six punts in his NFL regular-season debut vs. Chicago (Sept. 10)
  • Also threw his first NFL pass in that game, a 16-yard play on a successful fake punt late in the first half (RB Noah Herron made a fingertip catch)
  • The pass was his first in an organized game since another fake punt as a senior in 2003 at the University of Regina (Canada)
  • Hit a 66-yard punt at Detroit (Sept. 24), then matched the distance two weeks later, vs. St. Louis (Oct. 8)
  • Those were the longest by a Packers punter since Josh Bidwell's 68-yarder at Jacksonville on Dec. 3, 2001
  • Also had a 60-yarder at Phildalphia (Oct. 2) in between, giving him a 60-yard-plus boot in three straight games
  • Compiled twin 49.6-yard gross averages in back-to-back games, Sept. 24-Oct. 2; the mark was the team's highest (min. four punts) since Bidwell averaged 53.3 at New Orleans, Sept. 15, 2002
  • In Week 10, established a season high by averaging 50.0 yards on seven punts, including five over 50, at Minnesota (Nov. 12)
  • Averaged 39.5 yards on two punts just two days after his father's death vs. N.Y. Jets (Dec. 3), saying his father would have wanted him to play that day no matter how difficult the circumstances
  • In the rematch vs. the Vikings (Dec. 21), boomed a 61-yarder
College
  • In 2003, led Canadian college punters with a 45.9-yard average
