Brian Gutekunst
College Scout (Southeast)

Enjoying his 11th season as a college scout with the Green Bay Packers, Brian Gutekunst enters his ninth year scouring the all-important Southeast region. Previously a scout for the East Coast region for two years (1999-2000), Gutekunst was assigned his current responsibilities May 15, 2001.

Possessor of prior professional scouting and college coaching experience upon joining Green Bay on a full-time basis late in 1998, Gutekunst gained his first National Football League experience in the summer of 1995, when he assisted the coaching staff of the New Orleans Saints with the offensive line during training camp. Gutekunst's initial exposure to the Packers came in the summer of 1997, when he worked as an intern in the team's scouting department.

His first full-time appointment in professional scouting was in 1998 as a scouting assistant for the Kansas City Chiefs. After one year with the Chiefs, Gutekunst returned to the Packers when he was named as a college scout for the East Coast on Dec. 30, 1998, by then-Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf.

The 36-year-old Gutekunst earlier had played two years of college football for the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse before becoming an assistant coach for the team during his final two years at the school (1995-96) after a shoulder injury cut short his career. Serving as a linebackers coach during the 1995 season, he helped the school to the Division III national championship as the Eagles finished the season with an unblemished record of 14-0. Gutekunst majored in sports management.

Gutekunst prepped at Robbinsdale Armstrong High School in Plymouth, Minn., where he lettered four years for the football team as a quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back. An all-region and all-conference performer in football during his junior and senior seasons, he also earned two letters as a guard for the basketball team.

His father, John, is a coaching veteran, having last coached as the defensive coordinator at Duke University during the 2007 season. The elder Gutekunst previously was the head coach at the University of Minnesota from 1985-92, taking over the reins of the Golden Gophers program when Lou Holtz left to assume the head coaching position at Notre Dame.

Born in Raleigh, N.C., Gutekunst and his wife, Jen, reside in Raleigh with their daughters, Marley, 4, and Joie, 3, and infant son, Michael. In his spare time, Gutekunst enjoys playing golf, reading and spending time at the beach.
