Cruise For Cancer presents checks to six local groups

Ninth annual ride set for June 9; post-ride party at new Vandervest Harley-Davidson dealership

The Jerry Parins Cruise for Cancer, a motorcycle ride to benefit cancer patients and families throughout northeastern Wisconsin, presented checks totaling $86,500, to six local cancer support organizations Tuesday at Lambeau Field.

The funds distributed were raised in last year's Cruise for Cancer, which since its inception has raised more than $510,000 for the cause.

Jerry Parins, the Packers' former Director of Security and organizer of the event, distributed money to the following organizations: Angel Classic, Bellin Health Foundation, St. Mary's Hospital – A Woman's Place, St. Vincent Pediatric Cancer Clinic, St. Vincent Regional Cancer Center's Compassionate Care Fund, and Unity Limited Partnership.

Parins also previewed the ninth annual Cruise to be held on Saturday, June 9.

This year's ride features a round-trip route from Green Bay's Vandervest Harley-Davidson to the Pulaski fire station and back to the starting point for the post-ride party. The ride leaves Green Bay at 11 a.m.

Pulaski's stop, new to the ride, will feature Polish food and Packers players. Autographs can be obtained from the players for a $10 donation to the event.

On the day of the ride, registration begins at 9 a.m. and will continue through 10:30 a.m. The free post-ride party begins at 3 p.m. at the new Vandervest Harley-Davidson Dealership in Green Bay, 1966 Velp Ave. The party will include food and drink for purchase, a silent and live auction, entertainment from country band Suns of Memphis, and fun while bringing awareness to cancer.

A $20 donation per driver and $15 donation per passenger is required to participate in the ride. All registered riders will receive a free Cruise for Cancer commemorative bandana. All proceeds will go to helping local families throughout Northeastern Wisconsin battling cancer. Pre-registration forms currently are available through or at Vandervest Harley-Davidson in Peshtigo and Vandervest Custom Cycles in Green Bay. Those who pre-register before Wednesday, May 30, have the chance to win a Clay Matthews autographed mini helmet.

Interested riders also can raise additional money for the cause and win prizes by enlisting the help of others with the use of a pledge form. Top fundraisers will receive Vandervest Harley-Davidson gift cards. The form and more information are available on the event website.

Non-riders are invited to support the cause by attending the Pulaski event and the Green Bay post-ride party.

Diagnosed with cancer in 2003, Parins was strengthened during his journey by the support he received from his family and friends, and while witnessing families who also were dealing with the effects of the disease. At the time, Parins pledged to help other families dealing with cancer, and thus the Jerry Parins Cruise for Cancer ride was born.
