Backup fullback Nick Luchey, who had two pins surgically inserted into his broken left thumb this week, could be available Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks should GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman elect to use him.
Luchey shattered his thumb during practice last week when a tipped pass deflected awkwardly into his hand.
He saw limited action late against the Chicago Bears in the Packers' 38-23 win Monday night, and if he were to play this weekend it would be with his thumb and much of his forearm covered by a cast.
"It's casted up and protected," Sherman said. "From an injury standpoint, yes, he can go."
Due to the size of the cast, Luchey is somewhat limited, but has demonstrated an ability to catch passes during practice.
Sherman said Luchey probably would remain in the cast until the bye week, which begins after the October 19 meeting with the St. Louis Rams.
Sherman has until Saturday afternoon to make a determination regarding the playing status of linebacker Torrance Marshall for this weekend.
Marshall, who missed the first four games of the season while serving a suspension for violating the NFL's Substance Abuse Policy, returned to the team this week but hasn't been added to the active roster.
Sherman must activate Marshall, and waive a player to make room for him on the 53-man roster, by 3 p.m. CT Saturday to make him eligible for the Seattle game. Otherwise Marshall could remain inactive until Monday.
Sherman said Marshall looked "secure" at both the middle and strong-side linebacker positions in his first three practices back from the suspension.
"I thought he had a good week," Sherman said. "He has been conditioning in his absence the last four weeks. He looks like he's in pretty good shape."
Antuan Edwards, who has started at safety opposite Darren Sharper in all four games this season, has been downgraded to questionable for Sunday's game.
Edwards sprained his ankle against Chicago and hasn't practiced since.
"I think he'll be okay," Sherman said Friday. "He didn't practice today, so that's why I'll probably list him as questionable."
If Edwards is unable to play he would be replaced by Marques Anderson, who made 11 starts at safety last season.
