Training Camp Report - August 3, 2002

It wasn't an official scrimmage, but the Packers took another step closer to the real thing with Saturday's afternoon practice, which was predominantly made up of scrimmage situations, albeit without live tackling.

Quarterback Brett Favre, who was plagued by incomplete passes throughout the first drive, later redeemed himself by leading a drive that resulted in a 38-yard Ryan Longwell field goal. Along the way, running back Ahman Green had a nice 13-yard run, and tight end Bubba Franks caught a rocket from Favre for a 22-yard gain. Cornerback Darrien Gordon broke-up a pass intended for Donald Driver.

During the second drive, Doug Pederson completed a 25-yard pass to Javon Walker, setting up a touchdown run by rookie running back Tony Fisher from three yards out.

Rookie quarterback Craig Nall didn't waste any time impressing the largest contingent of Railbirds to attend a Packers practice this training camp. Nall needed just two plays to complete his first touchdown drive - a 35-yard heave to a wide-open tight end David Martin, and a 25-yard touchdown pass to receiver Karsten Bailey.

Next on the Packers' agenda was the red zone drill, which played out like a highlight film. Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila led the defense with four sacks, getting to all three quarterbacks at least once Billy Lyon chimed in with a sack of his own. A fired-up Torrance Marshall deflected a pass from his linebacker position to go with his three tackles.

Offensively, Favre threw three touchdown passes during the red zone drill, two to Terry Glenn from 19 and 13 yards out, and a 14-yarder to Walker. Pederson lofted a five-yard pass to Robert Ferguson in the back corner of the end zone, and Nall connected with newly acquired receiver Chris Jackson for a score of their own.

Practice concluded with 2-minute drills, with Joey Dozier plunging across the goal line to complete practice.

The Packers' next practice will include special teams only, and will be held Sunday afternoon from 1:00-1:45 at Clarke Hinkle Field, weather and field conditions permitting.
