GREEN BAY – The Packers bolstered their depth on the offensive line by trading for former Chiefs and Eagles backup Darian Kinnard.
Here are five things to know about the new addition:
- He's won a Super Bowl ring each of the last three years.
Kinnard (6-5, 322) spent last season as a backup in Philadelphia, and the previous two seasons he was on either the active roster or practice squad in Kansas City. So that's three Super Bowl rings despite just one career start, at right tackle, which came in last year's regular-season finale when the Eagles were resting their starters for the playoffs.
Previously, linebacker Ken Norton Jr. was the only player on a Super Bowl-winning team three straight years. Norton won the Super Bowl with the Cowboys in the 1992-93 seasons and then with the 49ers in the '94 season.
- He's a former fifth-round draft pick.
The Chiefs originally selected Kinnard out of Kentucky in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, with pick No. 145 overall. He was the second pick of the fifth round.
Five choices earlier, the Packers used the No. 140 overall selection, a fourth-round compensatory choice, on offensive lineman Zach Tom.
Kinnard played in one game with the Chiefs as a rookie and then did not make the 53-man roster the following year, getting released and re-signed to the practice squad.
- He took a pre-draft visit to Green Bay.
The Packers used one of their allotted 30 pre-draft visits in '22 on Kinnard, who was a consensus first-team All-American at Kentucky in 2021 at right tackle. He was the program's first offensive lineman to be named a consensus All-American since 1965.
He also won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy as the Southeastern Conference's top blocker that year. He started 37 consecutive games, all at right tackle, over the last three years of his college career.
- He can play tackle or guard.
Typical of offensive line prospects who interest the Packers, Kinnard can play multiple positions. In the recently completed preseason with the Eagles, he played both right guard and right tackle, with more snaps coming at guard.
He also took some snaps at left guard in practice, according to media reports out of Philadelphia.
- He has a famous relative he's apparently never met.
Kinnard's aunt is cousins with country music legend Dolly Parton. Kinnard told reporters prior to being drafted he'd never met her.
