Quarterback BRETT FAVRE of the Green Bay Packers and running back BRIAN WESTBROOK of the Philadelphia Eagles are the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Week for games played on September 24-25, the NFL announced Thursday.
Favre threw for 340 yards, completing 25 of 36 passes with three touchdowns for a passer rating of 127.1 in the Packers' 31-24 victory over the Detroit Lions. He became just the second NFL quarterback to throw for 400 career touchdowns, joining former Miami Dolphins QB Dan Marino (420).
Westbrook carried 8 times for 117 yards and two touchdowns in the Eagles' 38-24 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. In addition to rushing touchdowns of four and 71 yards, Westbrook added a four-yard touchdown reception.
Favre and Westbrook were selected from among finalists in air and ground categories through 148,304 fan votes. The other FedEx Express NFL Player of the Week finalists were quarterbacks MARK BRUNELL of the Washington Redskins and DONOVAN MC NABB of the Philadelphia Eagles, while running backs TATUM BELL of the Denver Broncos and WILLIE PARKER of the Pittsburgh Steelers were the other finalists for the FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week.
Favre received 63 percent of the fan votes for FedEx Express NFL Player of the Week, while McNabb received 25 percent and Brunell received 12 percent. Westbrook's 49 percent of the fan votes for FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week beat out Parker's 32 percent and Bell's 19 percent.
Fans voted for more than their favorite players. The weekly FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Week Awards are also a win for the local community. Along with the player awards, FedEx is awarding Children's Hospital of Wisconsin and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, the children's hospitals in each winning market, a check for $5,000.
The children's hospitals in the two season-long winner's markets, announced at Super Bowl XLI in South Florida, will be awarded $25,000 each. That means that FedEx will deliver nearly $250,000 to local children's hospitals around the country in recognition of the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Week Award winners.
