"Countdown to camp" is a position-by-position overview of the Packers' roster heading into training camp. The series continues with the running backs.

GREEN BAY – MarShawn Lloyd appears to have found answers and the Packers have renewed hope for their supremely talented, but oft-injured, running back.

After a recurring hamstring injury ended Lloyd's 2025 season without him ever appearing in a regular-season game, the former third-round pick traveled to California this offseason to meet with Dr. John Meyer of the Meyer Institute of Sport.

A battery of tests determined that Lloyd's issues may stem from the torn ACL that caused him to miss his freshman year at the University of South Carolina in 2020.

Although Lloyd made a full recovery and played 32 games over his next three collegiate seasons, Dr. Meyer and his team concluded the 5-foot-9, 220-pound running back was overcompensating in workouts to train his lower body.

In collaboration with Green Bay's training staff, a plan was put in place to help Lloyd navigate the Packers' offseason program and the results were very promising.

The 25-year-old running back avoided any setbacks and quickly reminded the Packers of what he's capable of when healthy. Lloyd showed burst out of the backfield and explosive one-cut ability while knifing through the interior offensive line.

It's those natural traits Green Bay has aimed to develop since drafting Lloyd with the 88th overall pick in 2024, the highest selection the Packers have used on the running back position since taking AJ Dillon in the second round in 2020.

Green Bay is counting on Lloyd, too, after the departure of Emanuel Wilson in free agency and an ongoing legal matter involving Josh Jacobs stemming from a domestic situation that occurred during the offseason program.

Jacobs has been Green Bay's leading rusher the last two years, tallying 2,258 yards and 28 touchdowns on 535 carries (4.2 yards per attempt). The 28-year-old running back battled his own injuries in 2025, missing two games and generating 400 fewer yards than his Pro Bowl campaign in 2024.

Rounding out the backfield is third-year veteran Chris Brooks, who signed a two-year extension with the Packers in March. First added to the practice squad prior to the 2024 campaign, Brooks has proven reliable in pass protection and as a pass-catcher out of the backfield.

In 32 regular-season appearances, the 6-foot-1, 219-pound running back has amassed 449 total yards with a touchdown on 87 touches.

Further down the depth chart, the Packers brought back a pair of former NFL draft picks who finished last year on the practice squad, fourth-year veteran Pierre Strong Jr. and Damien Martinez.

Strong, who entered the league as a fourth-round pick with New England in 2022, signed to the Packers' practice squad after training camp. He was elevated three times but wasn't active on gameday.

Strong has 499 rushing yards and two touchdowns in 46 career games. His last regular-season appearance came with Cleveland in 2024.

A seventh-round pick by Seattle last year, Martinez joined the Packers in Week 17 and signed a futures contract to remain in Green Bay after the season.

The 6-foot, 217-pound running back didn't touch the ball as a rookie but flashed NFL potential while eclipsing 1,000 rushing yards in back-to-back seasons at Oregon State and Miami (Fla.).

For the second straight year, the Packers did not add to the backfield through the draft, but signed Jaden Nixon as a college free agent. The 5-foot-11, 199-pound running back racked up 2,453 total yards and 25 touchdowns over five collegiate seasons spent with Oklahoma State, Western Michigan and UCF.
