Mike, thanks for the live chat! You were in midseason form! I hope we were too. I have a hard time evaluating preseason games. There's always way more than I can see or understand. Where should I land on this one?

I thought the first units were fine in their cameos. The kicker was the star of the night. Kyle McCord played better than I've seen in any of the practices, though the 3-4 QBs don't get many reps at Nitschke Field and McCord got a ton of work in this game. Impressive by him. The reserve units on defense left a lot to be desired. Too much open space, too many missed tackles. It got ugly. Now what matters is how all those young guys respond to the rough moments.

I had one great thing come out of this preseason matchup. My wife went from "We drafted a kicker from Florida?!?" to "This kicker is a keeper." Trey Smack was great. He hit the sweet spot, got immediate strong elevation, and split the uprights on every kick.

Smack took his good showing from Family Night and was even better. It's a long road from here still, but a pair of 58-yarders outdoors in a venue not normally kind to kickers is as good as it gets. He just needs to keep his head down and keep working.

Other than the kicking game, can you tell us of any other bright spots from the game?

I thought the backup safety tandem of Murvin Kenion III and Mark Perry struggled at first, and then those two made back-to-back plays during the goal-line stand that showed they were adjusting and reacting quicker. That was good work.

It appeared to me special teams were the best part of the game tonight. They all seemed to be doing their job.

Just the one flag on special teams if I recall? That's what I liked best from the return/coverage units.

Good day II. Not a question but a comment. In Mike's game recap, he mentions Trey Smack's perfect night. I wish to add that Trey also landed his kickoffs in the landing zone, a big improvement from last year's performance by the kickers. Also, Daniel Whelan did a great job with directional punting. The coverage teams seemed to perform well. Maybe the new ST coordinator is just what the doctor ordered.

Good point about the landing zone on kickoffs. That was a major sore spot last year.

I'm sure the film will show certain individuals who played well in spurts. But glaring breakdowns make everyone look bad in real time. The Inbox is full of frustration and bewilderment at what was going on defensively in the second half. I'm not going to get hung up on any of it with guys that far down the depth chart. If they don't prove they belong, they won't be here. Simple as that.

Really? If you think that showing was on him, I can't help you. He had no chance back there the way the pocket (or lack thereof) instantly collapsed. Three sacks in six plays looks awful for all involved, but I don't fault him.

McCord clearly has the edge right now, but I wonder if Drones gets reps next week in Denver with some of the better reserve O-linemen in front of him.

I'd wager that RB2 spot is a little more open than it was before this game. Not to say that MarShawn Lloyd played bad, but he didn't do much to stand out from the other options. Will be interesting to see what happens from here.

For his first game in a full calendar year, I thought Lloyd looked just fine and he's going to keep moving forward. What makes him stand out will be evident eventually, as long as he's able to stay out there. I'm confident of that.

So, what can we extrapolate from THAT?

It's about the individual, not so much the collective in preseason. I love the way Brandon Cisse plays. Benjamin St-Juste not giving up on the big explosive (which wasn't his man) and getting the tackle inside the 5 shouldn't be ignored. Jordan Morgan looked fine at LT. Warren Brinson's near-sack is one to file away. Collin Oliver had moments in both run D and pass rush. Sure, there was a lot of "Not good, Bob" out there as the game went on, but 74 of the 90 were active and only 53 are making the team.

What do you think has a greater impact on evaluating the team during preseason – the joint practices with other teams or the games itself?

For the young players fighting to make the roster, I'd say the preseason games are more valuable. For the starters preparing for the regular season, the joint practices matter more.

First question ever from a loyal Packers fan since 1958: Given their other-worldly RAS scores and their showings in the preseason, what are the odds Isaiah Neyor and/or J. Michael Sturdivant don't get snatched up in a hurry by other teams if the Pack tries to park them on the practice squad?

Well, those RAS scores didn't prompt anyone to draft them, and receivers generally aren't claimed off waivers outside of injury situations.

An endless amount. It is not a month to have any other commitments for that group.

Has there ever been a documentary about the players in the bottom churn at camp? What is the record for number of teams someone has been on before the start of the season?

I'm not aware of such a doc, but in my time the Packers have had players in camp who were with as many as two other teams that same year prior to coming to Green Bay. I'm not sure I've seen three.

Jacob Monk was recently described in II as playing "with great pad level." I've seen this description elsewhere as well. What does it mean and how isn't everyone doing so at this stage of competition?

It's another way to say he wins with leverage, and you'd be surprised even with the pros how fundamentals can lapse due to mental distraction or fatigue. Four quarters and 60-plus snaps is a long time for fundamentals to stay sound.

The offensive line seems to be slow coming together leaving Jordan Love scrambling and improvising more than he might like. Are the pieces there to build a solid line or might there be an addition or two yet to come?

I think the Packers like what they have. They're just sorting out some of the competition while easing a couple key pieces back from injury at the same time.

Gents, one knock on Love has been his ability to handle blitz pressure. I don't have the number in front of me, but someone had shared his passer rating under pressure versus in a clean pocket. Every QB is going to have a rating drop under pressure, but I guess his was higher than most. Whether that take was accurate or not, doesn't it make sense that all the pressure Gannon is throwing at him in practice should help when he sees it in a game? I'm looking forward to some big gashes when blitzed.

Metrics I've seen show Love has performed quite well against the blitz, and as such doesn't get blitzed as often as other QBs.

Just read an article on LaFleur where he is delegating more responsibilities to his assistants, even on offense. Got me thinking, does it make any sense that LaFleur and Adam Stenavich would rotate play calling responsibilities from game to game? The same game plan is put together but the individual idiosyncrasies of the two would be the "wrinkle" that defenses would have to prepare for, e.g., who are we getting for our game, LaFleur or Stenavich, force the team to study both.

I think the constant disruption to the continuity between play-caller and quarterback would outweigh any potential benefits to keeping the opponent guessing.

Teams with nine regular-season home games get one in preseason. Those with eight get two.

Re: Tom from Bismark, Jon-Eric Sullivan's comment is likely in reference to all the dead cap money the Dolphins are eating from players who got extended and did not live up to their extension. They are sitting on $180 million in dead cap money this year.

I know EP is pursuing additional revenue sources, but with the Lakers selling for $12.5 billion, is escalating franchise values a problem on the horizon for the Packers?

Potentially, because the higher the valuation, the more capital other clubs can raise via private equity. Due to the Packers' structure, they can't pursue that revenue stream, so the valuation of the franchise, whatever it is, serves no functional purpose. Not so for other clubs.

The game is all about three-point shots and dunks now. It's played 25 feet from the basket, or above the rim. The way the '80s Bucks, Celtics and Sixers played the game when I was growing up is a bygone NBA era.
