GREEN BAY – The Packers made their first defensive selection of the 2020 NFL Draft in the fifth round on Saturday, choosing Minnesota linebacker Kamal Martin with the 175th overall pick.
A former first-team all-state quarterback and defensive back in high school (Burnsville, Minn.), Martin converted to linebacker early in his college career and became a starter for the Gophers in 2018.
Take a look at Packers LB Kamal Martin during his college career.
During his career, the 6-3, 240-pounder recorded 177 tackles (106 solo), including 13 for loss and 3 ½ sacks. He also intercepted four passes, forced four fumbles, and recovered three.
This past season, Martin played in only eight games, missing five due to a knee injury, but he still was named honorable mention All-Big Ten. He posted career highs with 66 tackles and two interceptions despite the missed playing time.
Presumably Martin will be in the mix competing with Oren Burks, Curtis Bolton and Ty Summers for the No. 2 inside linebacker spot in Green Bay's defense alongside free-agent acquisition Christian Kirksey.
