Mini-Camp Report - June 6, 2003

With nearly 250 fans looking on, the Green Bay Packers continued their mini-camp workouts today at Clarke Hinkle Field. The Packers have drawn at least 200 fans for each session of this week's camp and will hold three additional practices next week.

After the defense dominated Thursday, wide receiver Donald Driver said that he and the receivers were going to rebound the next time out and "take care of business". Friday, they did just that, seemingly able to score at will while running the red zone offense.

In one of the opening plays, Brett Favre found an open Driver crossing the field for an easy score, and later connected in the corner of the endzone with a diving Karsten Bailey, who made the catch despite having Bhawoh Jue draped on his back.

Backup quarterback Doug Pederson also got into the action, hitting tight end Tyrone Davis in the middle of the field for another score.

As the defense tightened the reins, Favre was forced to find other options. After looking over the entire field, he finally found running back Ahman Green, lofting a pass over a scrambling defender to score yet another touchdown.

Frustrated by the events of the day, cornerback Mike McKenzie came up laughing after tossing his helmet in disbelief when Farve connected with Driver on a 45-yard bomb down the right sideline. Despite excellent coverage by McKenzie, Driver was able to score after bobbling the ball as McKenzie slid off the field behind him.

Moving on to 7-on7 drills, the defense seemed to feel a little more comfortable. Jue was able to pick off a Pederson pass after it bounced off the intended receiver, while linebacker Tony Donald soared to grab a bullet thrown over the middle by Favre.

Following the drills, most veterans were excused from the remainder of practice while rookies and some selected veterans continued their workouts.

Eric Crouch split time at quarterback with second year player Zak Kustok as running backs Najeh Davenport and Lamar Smith logged a few more carries out of the backfield.

The Packers will return to the field Monday at 11:00 a.m. for the first of three final workouts remaining in this year's mini-camp schedule. Weather and field conditions permitting, practice will be held outside at Clarke Hinkle Field (open to the public), but otherwise will be held inside the Don Hutson Center (closed to the public).
