Mini-Camp Report - June 8, 2004

Mini-camp continued for the Green Bay Packers out on Clarke Hinkle Field, Tuesday, albeit without star running back Ahman Green.

Green failed to attend the practice due to a prior commitment that he couldn't get out of, a team spokesperson said.

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman didn't meet with the media after practice, but was said to have been made aware of Green's schedule conflict ahead of time.

Nevertheless, Sherman was said to be "disappointed" by Green's absence, which -- like that of Cletidus Hunt before him -- isn't technically a violation, since the Packers' June mini-camp is voluntary.

Also missing practice was rookie defensive tackle Donnell Washington, who attended the birth of his child.

Five practice days into the camp, the Packers worked on two-minute drill and no-huddle scenarios for much of practice.

During team drills, Michael Hawthorne intercepted a pass from Brett Favre intended for Javon Walker. But Walker had his revenge later on, when he worked his way around Hawthorne to make a diving catch that thrilled the crowd of approximately 250 spectators.

"Everybody is supposed to make the easy catches," Walker said afterward. "It's catches like that, that I like to do, where the ball is on the inside of the defender, coming across his face. That's the exciting play. Those are the plays that people want to see and that's the plays I like to make."

Another candidate for "play of the day" came when Donald Driver made a one-handed grab of Favre's pass along the left sideline.

In one-on-one line drills, center Scott Wells drew cheers from fellow offensive lineman Mike Wahle after stopping defensive end Earl Cochran on two occasions from getting to the "quarterback," while Chukie Nwokorie displayed a burst of power, knocking Joe Hayes to the ground to get the "sack."

During the special teams portion of practice, the Packers worked on kickoff coverage. Later, after practice, several players remained on Clarke Hinkle Field to field bouncing onside kicks.

The Packers are scheduled to have three more practices this week, all beginning at 11 a.m. However, times for practices are subject to change.

Weather and field conditions permitting, practice will be held outside at Clarke Hinkle Field (open to the public), but inclement weather or poor field conditions could push the team inside the Don Hutson Center (closed to the public).
