Mini-Camp Report - May 3, 2003

More than 350 fans lined the fences at Clarke Hinkle Field to watch the Packers in their final full-squad mini-camp practice Saturday morning.

Most veterans were excused from camp after practice, with rookies and selected veterans remaining to finish out the weekend.

Special teams coordinator John Bonamego introduced to camp a portable microphone system that could be easily heard by the Railbirds. Much of Bonamego's instruction Saturday centered on blocking technique for the Packers' punt return unit.

In team drills it was defense that dominated the action.

Second-year linebacker Marcus Wilkins batted a Brett Favre pass that rookie cornerback Chris Johnson intercepted. Then, on the following play, Mike McKenzie stepped in front of Donald Driver to make a pick.

A little later, second-year defensive end Aaron Kampman tipped and intercepted a Favre pass near the line of scrimmage. Kampman then had the ball stripped from his arms a yard into his return, but rookie linebacker Nick Barnett scooped it up before the offense could recover.

Despite some misplays, the Packers' offensive did have moments of success.

In camp on a tryout with the Green and Gold, wide receiver Shockmain Davis earned perhaps the biggest applause of practice when he dove to make a fingertip grab of a 20-yard pass by Doug Pederson.

Wide receiver Robert Ferguson then showed his athleticism with a leaping, twisting grab along the left sideline.

The Packers will conclude mini-camp Sunday with a 9:30 a.m. practice for rookies and selected veterans. Weather and field conditions permitting, practice will be held outside at Clarke Hinkle Field (open to the public), but otherwise will be held inside the Don Hutson Center (closed to the public).
