The Green Bay Packers have parted ways with defensive coordinator Dom Capers, assistant linebackers coach Scott McCurley and defensive line coach Mike Trgovac, Head Coach Mike McCarthy announced Wednesday.
"I want to thank each of these men and their families for all that they gave to the Packers during their time here," McCarthy added. "We enjoyed a lot of success together and they directly contributed to our accomplishments. These are difficult personal decisions and we hope for the best for their families moving forward."
Capers has been the defensive coordinator for the Packers for nine seasons, originally joining Green Bay on Jan. 19, 2009. Since taking over the defense, the Packers rank No. 1 in the NFL in interceptions (176), tied for No. 4 in total takeaways (251), No. 5 in sacks (365), tied for No. 7 in interceptions returned for touchdowns, No. 8 in points allowed per game (21.5) and No. 9 in opponent passer rating (83.2). In 2009, he was named Coordinator of the Year by Sporting News after leading Green Bay's defense to a No. 2 overall ranking. In 2010, Capers coordinated a unit that finished No. 2 in the league in scoring defense (15.0 points per game) en route to winning Super Bowl XLV. Under Capers' leadership, CB Charles Woodson was named the 2009 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and LB Clay Matthews has made six Pro Bowls and become the all-time franchise leader in sacks. In all, Green Bay defenders have made 17 appearances in the Pro Bowl during Capers' tenure.
McCurley has spent 12 years with the Packers, originally joining the organization as a coaching administrative intern in 2006. He was promoted to coaching administrator in January 2007 and to defensive quality control coach on Feb. 3, 2009. After a five-year tenure in that role, he was elevated to assistant linebackers coach on Feb. 7, 2014, working in support of associate head coach/linebackers Winston Moss with an emphasis on inside linebackers. Over the last three seasons, he has helped utilize the versatility of Matthews as well as develop a trio of young linebackers in Blake Martinez, Jake Ryan and Joe Thomas.
Trgovac coached the defensive line for Green Bay since joining the team in 2009, his second stint with the organization after serving in the same position in 1999. Since 2009, the Packers have allowed the fifth-fewest rushing touchdowns (94) in the NFL. Green Bay has finished in the top 10 in sacks in six of the last eight seasons. He assisted in the development of former fourth-round pick Mike Daniels, who has been named a Pro Bowl alternate each of the last three seasons and is No. 2 among Green Bay defensive tackles (since 1982) with 27.0 career sacks. In 2011, Trgovac helped B.J. Raji become the first Packers defensive tackle selected to the Pro Bowl since Bob Brown in 1972.
