GREEN BAY – The official start of NFL free agency and the new league year is almost upon us.

Following the two-day negotiation window that began on Monday, teams will be permitted to enter into formal agreements with unrestricted free agents at the onset of the new league year on Wednesday at 3 p.m. CT.

The Packers have 20 players with expiring contracts, including 14 unrestricted free agents who will count towards the compensatory formula if they sign elsewhere before May 5.

The Packers also have a restricted free agent, fullback Malcolm Johnson, who must be extended a tender by Wednesday or he'll otherwise will be free to sign elsewhere as "street" free agent.

Finally, Green Bay has five exclusive-rights free agents (players with fewer than three accrued NFL seasons), who can be retained with a one-year tender at the league minimum.

The NFL and NFLPA also announced in a joint statement Monday that clubs will delay indefinitely the start of their offseason programs, in addition to several other procedures for the start of the new league year, until further notice.

The Packers were scheduled to open their offseason program on April 20, but that start date has been postponed until the league, its 32 clubs, and medical and public-health professionals can determine an appropriate start date in the wake of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The league also announced that while free agency will start on time, clubs may not bring any free-agent player to a club facility or other location to meet with club personnel. Club personnel, including members of the club medical staff, may not travel to any location to meet with or conduct a medical examination of a free-agent player.

The NFL and NFLPA are developing protocols that will provide clubs with opportunities to review a free-agent player's medical records from his prior club(s) and to arrange for a free agent to have a medical exam in the player's home city or at another nearby location.
