The Green Bay Packers have promoted cornerback Erwin Swiney from the practice squad to the teams' 53-man active roster, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Saturday.

To make room for Swiney, veteran running back Moe Smith has been placed on waivers.

Swiney, a rookie free agent from the University of Nebraska, had been on the practice squad since Oct. 30. He originally had been signed as a free agent April 26, 2002, and gone through training camp and the preseason before being waived Sept. 1 in the team's final roster reduction for the regular season.

He was signed to the practice squad for the first time Sept. 4, released the following day and then re-signed to the squad Sept. 9, remaining there until advanced to the active roster for the first time Oct. 12. He played against New England the next day and was waived Oct. 15. He was then re-signed to the practice squad Oct. 18, released Oct. 22 and then re-signed the most recent time Oct. 30.

Swiney will continue to wear jersey No. 26.
