Three Packers Named To Pro Bowl

With two regular-season games remaining and the playoff picture still unclear, the Green Bay Packers don't yet know whether their season will continue into January.

But what they do know is that three Packers players have earned the right to suit up in February, at the Pro Bowl in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Packers quarterback Brett Favre, running back Ahman Green and right guard Marco Rivera were named to the 2003 Pro Bowl, the NFL confirmed Thursday.

That's down from last season's five selections, which was made six after wide receiver Donald Driver played in the all-star game as an alternate.

This season the Packers had eight players named alternates: linebacker Nick Barnett, center Mike Flanagan, tight end Bubba Franks, defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, fullback William Henderson, kicker Ryan Longwell, cornerback Mike McKenzie and safety Darren Sharper.

All three of this year's Pro Bowl selections have attended the all-star event previously.

This is the eighth Pro Bowl selection for Favre, the third for Green and the second for Rivera, who a season ago broke an 18-year streak in which no Packers offensive lineman was selected for the event.

Balloting for the Pro Bowl is comprised of three equally-weighted sections, combining the votes of fans, coaches and players.

This season, fan voting at generated a record 55 million votes, up from 2002's 51,677,578, which was the previous record.

Green received the sixth-highest fan vote total in the league at 798,802 votes. Barnett (185,307) was second among rookies in the fan voting, while Flanagan (143,655) led all centers.

Totals of the coach and player votes are not released. The NFL is the only professional sports league to combine voting by fans, coaches and players.

Starting lineups for the Pro Bowl will not be announced until Wild Card Saturday, January 3.

Full NFC and AFC all-star squads will be announced by the NFL today at approximately 4 p.m. ET, before being aired on the NFL Pro Bowl Selection Show on ESPN at 7 p.m. ET.

The Pro Bowl at Aloha Stadium is February 8.
