Packers sign long snapper

LS Jesse Schmitt participated at Packers' rookie camp in May on tryout basis

The Green Bay Packers signed LS Jesse Schmitt and released LB Manoa Pikula(mah-NOH-ah pee-KOO-lah). The transactions were announced Tuesday by Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations.

Schmitt (6-foot-2, 250 pounds), an undrafted rookie out of Purdue, was the long snapper for the Boilermakers from 2011-14. After serving as the primary long snapper on punts in 2011, he handled all snapping duties during his final three seasons. Schmitt was named Academic All-Big Ten for four consecutive years (2011-14). He will wear No. 77 for the Packers.

Pikulasigned with Green Bay on May 6.
