Inbox: He'll be better for what happened

It’s a tough position to play

WR Matthew Golden
WR Matthew Golden

Keith from Springfield, MO

What does "G" mean? Matt LaFleur said QB Love is a "G" in giving praise to Love after the Dallas game. I sure would like to know what coach meant.

The logo and what it represents. Don't think too hard now.

Bill from Raleigh, NC

Hi II, I really was impressed with our defense. No Micah Parsons. No Javon Hargrave. No Edgerrin Cooper. But, they played very tough against a good QB. When a ball wasn't perfectly thrown our secondary made a play. Without Josh Jacobs, it doesn't seem we have a good enough RB, but our defense should keep us in a lot of games. That's a big deal.

There's so much to like about the way this defense is playing. With each passing week, the breakdown against Atlanta on TNF definitely looks like the exception and not the rule.

Steve from Pueblo, CO

This defense is special.

The players are thriving off Gannon's aggression. I can't recall covering a game where the Packers' defense was so aggressive with pressure packages from start to finish. Gannon & Co. just kept attacking, and the Cowboys never made them regret it.

Brad from Bozeman, MT

That was a masterful defensive performance. The scheme, the rotations, the communication, and the effort were all in sync. Gannon crafted a fantastic plan. Zaire Franklin called a great game on the field. We manhandled the Cowboys offense. It was a shame that we received so many ticky-tacky roughing the passer calls. Especially the one on Lukas Van Ness that erased Carrington Valentine's interception. What about the defensive effort stood out to you?

Aside from the aggression noted above, the open-field tackling. With all those blitzes, the coverage was compromised numbers-wise several times, and receivers caught passes with a chance to break one tackle and take off. But the corners got them down. They might've gotten dragged for a couple extra yards, but they didn't miss those crucial tackles.

Kevin from Rockton, IL

I loved Jeff Hafley, but adding the toughness of Zaire Franklin and the aggressiveness of Jonathan Gannon, this is a better defense.

I still think the loss of Cooper is going to hurt, and show up more, in some upcoming games. But getting Parsons back will mitigate that, too. To sign Franklin for half of what it would've cost to keep Quay Walker looks genius.

Nathan from Williamstown, MA

Jonathan Gannon's plan was simple but diabolical: Pretend you're sending an all-out blitz on every passing down. Most of the time, back off and just rush four, but leave in just enough blitzes that the QB can never get comfortable. Dak looked rattled all night. Is this a sustainable formula on D?

I wouldn't say most of the time they backed off. They sent extra guys, a LOT. But to your sustainable question, game plans are tailored to the opponent, and adjustments are made as games go along. I don't expect to see that much aggression every week. It's going to vary for any number of reasons.

Pat from Peoria, IL

So is Keisean Nixon a priority re-signing now?

That's an offseason question, but I hope folks realize how well Nixon has played during this three-game winning streak the next time he gives up a downfield completion. Because he will. They all do. It's a tough position to play.

Sam from Odenton, MD

How great is Evan Williams? That interception set the tone for this defense, got the crowd even more fired up, and the whole team fed off of it for the whole game. On to Detroit!

The timing of his break on that route/ball was impeccable. Soon enough to make it a smooth snag, but not too soon as to allow Prescott to see what he was up to.

Dan from Westerville, OH

The defense last week was written off as playing a backup QB. I hope they get their props after holding this superstar offense down. Can you even imagine what they could be with a Hall of Fame pass rusher?

Anyone you have in mind?

William from Scranton, PA

Mike, what a rollercoaster of a game for Matthew Golden. Three drops, two on potential touchdowns, yet he kept coming up with crucial catches. The drops were frustrating, but I loved that he didn't disappear – and Love kept trusting him. What does that say about his resilience and their connection?

Plenty. There's no time to wallow in despair in this league when something goes wrong. When you don't do that, those around you will maintain confidence in you. Golden's got what it takes to be a star and he'll be better for what happened.

Matt from Pontiac, MI

Here's a heartening stat: Trey Smack was 3-for-3 in field goals and 2-for-2 in extra points.

In basketball, they call that a rebound.

Marty from Naperville, IL

I think the pack needs a third consistent wide receiver when the defense puts their two best cover man on them. Do you Savion Williams can be that guy?

I think Williams can contribute regularly much like he did Sunday night, as a possession receiver and occasional gadget player, and maybe his role grows from there. But the third consistent target needs to be Tucker Kraft. He's getting there. I believe that.

Doug from Yorkville, WI

Granted, the O-line is playing somewhat better, but do you think that Josh Jacobs' return is going to make a big difference to our anemic running game?

I don't know. He'll be able to help. I'm sure of that. How much? Presumably we'll find out.

Chad from Hortonville, WI

I know we won, and I'm extremely happy about that, but this lack of a running game is not sustainable. What is it going to take to somehow get more production on the ground?

I wish I knew. They have to find some running concept they're good at blocking, something they can call over and over again, with small variations. But they've got nothing to hang their hat on with the ground game. I don't get it.

Jake from Logan, UT

I guess it would be one thing if Jordan Love also sometimes received the special protection whistle...

I can't suggest "make the safety rules reviewable" anymore, because I've been doing it for 10 years already. It's a simple, workable solution that might slow the game down occasionally, but it would be worth it. The league has been more concerned about how long the games take than getting the calls right for years now. That has to change.

Larry from Carney, MI

Good morning. Most personal foul calls come with a fine. In your opinion how many RTP penalties that were called are going to result in a fine?

Karl Brooks will likely get fined for landing with his body weight on Prescott. But I can't imagine the other two will generate a fine.

Rachel from Hudson, WI

Stop the charade. Just throw a red jersey on the QB and call it a day.

Feels like only a matter of time, even if that time doesn't come before I retire.

Tom from Lisbon, WI

Just stop with the flags. Just STOP. Please. It makes the product almost unwatchable!

Almost?

T from Cedar Falls, IA

What, exactly, is the purpose of expedited reviews? If you need to have New York go over your response before answering, I understand.

That's pretty good. As I noted in the live blog, that one sequence created a fascinating chain of consequences. A close play on the sideline as the defender snags the ball, officials confer, rule incomplete. Replay assist says it was an interception, which triggers an automatic review as a turnover, and then after further review – further clearly being the operative word – it wasn't an interception. All that was missing was Schottenheimer throwing his red challenge flag to have them look at it again.

Taylor from Fargo, ND

Midseason, particularly after a rough stretch, Vic would always say, "Help is not on the way." But with recent news on Josh Jacobs, and Micah Parsons' eventual return, this may be a season that defies the adage.

We shall see.

Rick from Shawano, WI

A dominant win or was it? All it does is paper over problems. The issues that have plagued the team all season have not been fixed. Among them drops, penalties, turnovers, sacks and no running game. To think this will not come back to haunt them is naive at best.

The Packers took a step back in the realm of clean football after last week's better showing. No denying that. But if you think they're "papering over problems," listen to LaFleur's postgame presser. He's not naïve to the shortcomings from that performance.

Scott from Hanson, IA

How do the officials determine where to spot the ball on extra point tries (with regard to the hash marks)? I've watched, and I can't see any rhyme or reason to it. Sometimes left, sometimes right, sometimes center. Does the offense have a choice?

Yes.

Andrew from Clearwater, FL

How is the per-game roster bonus paid? Is being on injured reserve qualify for a per-game roster bonus? If not, then is the per-game bonus money credited to the cap?

It's probably paid by direct deposit. Sorry, couldn't resist. Per-game roster bonuses are based on being on the active 48 on gameday. If it's not paid, the cap gets credited.

Dennis from Maryville, TN

Fond memory? I was at the 2007 game at Texas Stadium. Very cool to get that first view of Aaron Rodgers but I didn't enjoy the visceral jabs from too many Cowboy fans after the game. Makes me think twice about away games. I can stay home and get insulted for free. Guess I need a thicker skin.

I got tickets for a good friend of mine who lives in Texas to attend the 2016 NFC Divisional playoff game in Dallas. Afterward, she thanked me for the tickets and the thrilling victory but said she'd never go to a game there again.

Greg from Virginia Beach, VA

Will the Brewers bring back Woodruff for the prom?

Speaking of old Vic-isms, ha.

Carl from Sheboygan, WI

Wouldn't it be poetic if Cleveland made the WS since the movie "Major League" took place in both cities, and Bob Uecker (aka Harry Doyle) were the radio voices? I have to believe that movie would run several times along with many "just a bit outside" references! Go Pack! Go Brewers!

I might've told this story before … when I was in high school, I went to a late-summer Sunday afternoon game at County Stadium with some friends, and at the end of the game they put an announcement on the scoreboard that they wanted fans to stay to be part of the filming of this movie called "Major League." We had no idea what it was. I so wish I hadn't had to go home right after the game.

Dave from Lake Zurich, IL

I'm finding John Smoltz to be insufferable during the telecast of the NLCS so I hit the mute button. I have no interest in hearing a lecture after almost every pitch. I'm wondering if Spoff has an opinion on this.

When Smoltz first got into the booth, he had a ton to offer as a Hall of Famer who was both a frontline starter and dominant closer, and he picked very important spots to make specific points to help the viewer. Now he doesn't prioritize any of his commentary and just never stops talking. Insufferable is the same word my friends and I have texted one another during games.

Ron from Downey, CA

Dear Spoff, this is a question usually reserved for the end of the year but, given the Brewers' current situation, is there such a thing as "too much rest"?

For the hitters, maybe. For the pitchers, I don't think so.

Scott from Reno, NV

Dear II, I have just finished eating a heaping plate full of crow. Three weeks ago I was saying, "I'm not giving up but I see no reason to believe we will go anywhere good." Now, I'm saying, "We look really, really good." Dallas and Chicago both have good teams and we controlled both games. We have two WR1s. We still aren't close to what we can be and we still don't have Micah back. Suddenly, the future looks bright.

I try not to swing too far either way. Division game on the road coming up in Detroit. Both offenses playing well, but only one defense is. Tough place to play but these Packers have enjoyed recent success there. Yet another pivotal matchup. The season is definitely in full swing now.

Nate from Canada

Here's a crazy stat, every team in the North is above .500. That's both conferences. No other division in the NFC has more than one team above .500.

Buckle up, folks. Happy Monday.
