Inbox: The mentality he possesses can't be coached

That means something

Go ahead, complain about something. I dare you…

I'm getting too old to stay up so late.

Kerry from Lakewood Ranch, FL

Considering who the first two opponents were, this is the best start to the season since…?

Either 2019 (Bears, Vikings) or 2007 (Eagles, Giants, followed by Chargers) maybe.

Steve from McCordsville, IN

Another great game, against a very good team. Suddenly, that daunting schedule looks a lot less intimidating. That isn't chortling…that's growing confidence in the potential of this team. I'm sure the players' confidence must be soaring too, right? What an exciting start to the season!

The Packers have made themselves one of the teams everybody's going to be talking about, and it's best not to care about what's said.

Patrick from Paducah, KY

Anyone else on board with scoring 27 points every time out with room for more while allowing an average under 16 per game? Seems like that could be a recipe for success…

It'll play.

Mike from Appleton, WI

They're real and they're spectacular! The most surprising thing to me is that they have yet to trail this year. What is the most surprising thing to you?

Not only have they not trailed, but against two of the last four standing in the NFC from last January, they've held a multi-score lead for 80 minutes, 51 seconds of a total of 120 minutes played (if I did all the math right).

DB from Wausau, WI

Hello Insiders! I think the Jordan Love run for a first down set the tone for the whole game, both sides of the ball. Any play you think made a bigger impact?

The 57-yard catch and run by Tucker Kraft three plays prior did it for me.

Al from Chardon, OH

"I think the Packers have the next guy everyone will compare the next guy to." Well said Wes!

Hats off to the Hodster for that one, and for a good rundown on Kraft's big night.

Jake from Marina Del Rey, CA

Did … did the Packers just contain a mobile quarterback?

They contained plenty of mobile QBs last season, as I outlined before the game. The difference this time is they contained a mobile QB while also sacking him four times and hitting him a dozen times. That didn't happen last year.

Mark from Madison, WI

I realize that it was a one-score contest in the second half, but that never seemed like a close game. With a mini-bye to get some players healthy and get Micah Parsons more integrated with the defense, this team looks like a juggernaut! Talk me down, please!

The offense has been a little feast-or-famine, as LaFleur said after the game, and there's plenty to clean up on special teams. It also will be a whopper of a challenge to continue playing defense like this in an offense-oriented league. So those are my caveats. But the Packers are playing the type of defense that opponents see on film and don't look forward to facing. That means something.

Shannon from Ovilla, TX

Big-time win. Missing two starting OL, a top two receiver goes out early, special teams are less than that, plenty of penalties and still able to control the game. The defense kept holding on short fields and controlled a running quarterback. 2-0 with areas of improvement for the coaches to focus on. I couldn't have imagined a better start to the season.

As noted in my game recap, for Washington to start drives at its own 45 and 43, and at the Green Bay 44, and not even sniff the end zone on any of those three possessions had to be immensely frustrating for the visitors. Not allowing any points at all thanks to two missed field goals in there was just icing on the cake for the home team. Up front on offense, Jordan Morgan is a heck of a sixth man. The Packers were in a tough spot at right tackle and made the best of it. Zach Tom is an elite player and hopefully won't be out too long.

Michael from Signal Mountain, TN

Keisean Nixon played an amazing game! I believe I counted at least five passes defensed and it might have been more. From my perspective, he was the player of the game. What do you think about his performance?

He was credited with five, the most by a Packers defender in a game (as Wes had in his game notes) since Jaire Alexander his rookie year (2018) at the LA Coliseum. Nixon is a baller, man. He backs down from no assignment and stays fully engaged at all times. No defensive position is harder to play than cornerback, so not every game will go like that, but the mentality he possesses can't be coached.

Cami from Jupiter, FL

Mike, I think it was you who called out Nixon as being the player who would most benefit from the Micah Parsons trade. Sheeesh, no kidding! Great night by 25.

Oh yeah, I did say that. Thanks.

David from Sarasota, FL

Quay Walker and Edgerrin Cooper are reminding me of the impact White and David used to bring when they were in their prime in Tampa. They were so quick to the ball, the runs seemed to be cut off before they ever had a chance to develop. I would love to see 4-5 years of that in Green Bay.

That's an interesting comparison. It's only been a couple of games, and we didn't see the Walker-Cooper tandem together much last year, but I remember that Bucs pair just looking so fast out there. You might be onto something.

Keith from Bakersfield, CA

I am gobsmacked at how good this team has been against the run, having shipped KC to Dallas a week before the opener. Surely they were going to need some time to adjust. 51 total yards, and Daniels' second lowest rushing total in his career. They haven't allowed 100 yards in total this season. Did you see this coming against two awfully good running teams?

No, but I'm not complaining. You could see there were times Daniels wanted to run, but he could tell he wasn't going to get anywhere so he just got rid of the ball.

Amy from Hudson, WI

Love thrilled with some great throws. I was almost just as excited to see him throw the ball away more than once and take a sack late in the game to keep the clock running. No unnecessary risks. Protect the ball. Situational awareness. Those types of decisions can be just as important as the highlight-reel plays.

Love knew he put the ball in harm's way unnecessarily a couple of times last Sunday. Given all the aggressive shots the Packers took downfield, it was good to see him switch modes when appropriate.

Scott from Houston, TX

How bad is Jayden Reed's injury? I was thinking separated shoulder or AC joint Good gosh I hope not.

It's a broken collarbone. Tough blow. There's nothing anyone can do to hurry back from a broken bone. He'll just have to give it the proper healing time.

Nathan from Williamstown, MA

I was surprised how much the Packers rotated through their receivers, especially how much Savion Williams was used after missing much of training camp. If they can ever have all those guys (plus Christian Watson) healthy at the same time, look out.

Watson and Reed both out now will put more on the plates of rookies Matthew Golden and Williams as they come along with veteran mainstays Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks, and Malik Heath made his own big play to get going last night. Everyone else's targets just went up until those other two get back in the mix. Who's going to cash them in?

The Green Bay Packers kicked off their Week 2 matchup against the Washington Commanders at Lambeau Field on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025.

Brad from Parker, CO

Happy start of the mini-bye fellas. Mike, a week ago, you had stated that the Packers would be either 2-0, 1-1 or 0-2 after this game, and everyone would have a narrative. I know … just beat Cleveland, but after the hot start, what do you want to see this team work on in the film room to close out the quarter pole of the season with the next two weeks on the road before the real bye?

I want to see the special teams not hurting the offensive field position so much, and I want to see Josh Jacobs get going. If defenses are going to load up to stop the run, then put it on the passing game and don't run into walls. But he's got 150 rushing yards through two games under very tough circumstances. Once he gets going, that's when I think the offense will really find its rhythm.

Aaron from St. Paul, MN

I don't recall seeing defensive holding so prevalent before. Were the defensive holding calls pretty soft last night or was it just me?

That sentiment was pretty strong in the live chat comments I was seeing. I'm not able to see a lot of replays, but that's the sense I got.

Mike from Geneva, IL

The Bears and Lions play on Sunday and the loser will not only be 0-2, but will have two division losses. I think teams that start 0-2 only make the playoffs about 11% of the time and I'm sure the odds are considerably worse having both losses in the division. Is this as close as it gets to a must-win game in Week 2?

With the seventh playoff spot in the conference and 17 regular-season games now, the 0-2 start isn't quite what it used to be statistically. But I would say starting 0-2 with two division losses makes for an extremely difficult path to a division title.

Brian from Bemidji, MN

As a high school football ref, I'm all for the "point of emphasis." What happens on Sunday trickles down to Saturday, which trickles down to Friday night.

I hear you, and I get that. Wholeheartedly. But I wonder, semi-seriously here, if things like taunting in the NFL should just be a fine and not a 15-yard penalty if there's no physical contact involved. Let the refs have some other-colored flag they can throw and assess a fine right then and there. Just a thought.

Kathryn from Greenville, WI

How will the new stadium in Chicago influence what changes at Lambeau? Sometimes it is about "keeping up with the Joneses."

One, are you sure you don't have that backwards? Two, I don't anticipate the Packers concerning themselves much with what the Bears build and how they build it. When they're finished, Lambeau will be the only outdoor stadium in the NFC North, which is sad but also a potential plus for Green Bay.

Tom from Columbus, NJ

Can you explain the strategy/thought process behind the Watson extension? I think it's a good thing so he can make sure he's fully healthy before returning this season. Just curious what other benefits there might be.

I look at this as effectively giving Watson, who was a high second-round pick, a fifth-year option as if he were a first-rounder, only at a bargain rate compared to the actual fifth-year options for the '22 draft class. And now, as you noted, he can focus on his health and helping the team when he's able and called upon, without being worried about his next long-term contract just yet.

Kenton from Rochester, MN

That must have been a fun game with the white-out, the perfect weather and, of course, the victory. On a personal note though, it must be a long night for you having to generate all the postgame content (which is much appreciated, btw). Isn't it worth it though, to now have your whole weekend free?

Oh, you have no idea.

Kyle from Los Angeles, CA

I thought that the Packers playing nine games against 2024 playoff teams (plus the Bengals) seemed tough until I realized that the Lions and Eagles both have to play 11. They're tied for the most in NFL history; plus the Lions get the Bengals too. Have you ever seen a season so packed with marquee matchups? To borrow a Spoffism: "Buckle up, everybody."

And we've barely gotten started. Speaking of buckling up …

Zak from Huntington Beach, CA

Have you ever seen in-car footage from a rally race? We're in the driver's seat, feathering the throttle over a hill crest on a gravel road at 188 mph. Myriad obstacles and blindspots on the horizon; a rooster's tail of dirt and dust in our wake. LaFleur in the co-driver's seat, map in hand, calling out the directions for the upcoming turn. We can't think about the finish line, we just gotta keep our hands on the wheel and our eyes focused on what's directly in front of us.

Happy Friday.
