Hey everybody, thanks for logging on. Another gameday almost here already. Go ahead and start sending in your questions and I'll get rolling right away.
Mike, do you think Colby Wooden felt like Moses at the Red Sea when the Lions offensive line split to cover Micah Parsons, as Montgomery was headed at him near the Lions goal line?
Ha, that certainly unfolded nicely for Wooden, who I thought put together a really nice game coming off his best training camp as a pro so far.
So excited that Christian Watson isn't going anywhere yet regardless of how his return to play goes this season! Why do you think this deal got done after week 1 but before he's cleared to play?
Hard to say exactly. The Packers obviously want to keep Watson around, and maybe this way he doesn't have to worry about being in a contract year when he comes back. He can just focus on making sure he's totally healthy and helping the team whenever called upon. It takes some pressure off him, and the Packers don't have to worry about those monster dollars receivers are getting for another year yet.
Yeah we're still in the honeymoon stage, but doesn't it appear Parsons just fits with the Packers and has found a home in Green Bay?
He sure seems to have fit into the locker room well in a short period of time. He's embraced his teammates, and vice versa.
Signing Christian Watson to an extension shows confidence in is health. Do you think he will be activated after the bye week?
That's when he'll first be eligible to return to practice, essentially. But I don't know what the team's timeline is.
Oldest vs. Youngest team tomorrow night. We know Green Bay is only young in the "age" department but do you see this quick turnaround being a factor even though its only week 2?
I guess we'll find out. In Week 2, I don't think the age factor will matter much either way.
Hey Mike, not a football question, but I have to ask; did you get the wood type?
Indeed I did. Thanks so much. Very cool.
What is the key to containing Daniels? I'm stoked on fast linebackers in Quay Walker and Edgerrin Cooper.
The Packers' speed on defense is a good counter to Daniels' running ability. Walker, Cooper and Parsons are all really, really fast. I'm writing a column for tomorrow morning about the mobile QB storyline.
I've never been to a white out game. How do the stands look?
I expect it to look pretty cool at night.
Tough turnaround for a Thursday night game after playing an intense game on Sunday. Hope they can come out with the same kind of fire they did on Sunday. That was a fun game to watch.
These short weeks are tough on everybody. I do think there's an advantage to being at home and not having to get on a plane on Wednesday.
Tony Romo expressed surprise that Parsons stayed in as long as he did. Think he and the coaches are trying to accelerate his conditioning?
Parsons basically said yesterday he was lobbying to stay in the game longer to help himself get into football shape.
I saw Micah Parsons has Cooper on his fantasy team. Does this have to be a non monetary league to be allowed?
There's a dollar limit to playing fantasy to stay within the gambling policy guidelines. As long as the prize money isn't more than a couple hundred bucks, it's fine.
Do you think Washington's familiarity with Parsons will make this game much different than Detroit, besides Daniels' running?
Maybe, but Parsons had 4 1/2 sacks in two games against Washington last year.
Any idea why Nick Niemann became available? Great first game on ST.
I don't know why things didn't work out for Niemann in Houston after signing there as a free agent, but the Packers' personnel department was certainly keeping an eye on that situation and pounced when he became available.
Do you think Anthony Belton getting on the field at the end of Game 1 was to avoid a repeat of having a rookie's first "in game" experience being at a critical point in the season (see the Eagles' game last year)? Darian Kinnard seemed to be playing fine to that point, so just curious.
That could've been part of the thinking there. I won't dismiss that.
I have to believe our new defensive line coach made a difference, this week with a "running" qb, will be another big test. one at a time baby! GPG
By all accounts, the guys up front have bought into how Covington is coaching them.
Good afternoon, Mike. I just wanted to say thank you for doing the WYMM column each week; it was one of my favorite pieces of content to read. I'm bummed that it's now gone, but I do hope you can occasionally incorporate elements of it into your other content. Thanks again, and Go Pack Go!
Thanks for the kind words, and I'll do my best, for sure.
Who is going to handle the kickoff and punt returns?
We saw both Matthew Golden and Jayden Reed on punts last week, and Savion Williams on kickoffs.
Mike, if Zach can't go, do you see Kinnard/Belton splitting time again? Or was that just garbage time for Belton?
Good question on the split time idea. The Packers have shown they're not averse to that, obviously. But I honestly don't know, and they're not saying, for good reason.
Do you think parsons is going to be in game shape this Thursday he looked gassed after almost 2 snaps on Sunday
That seems a bit of an exaggeration. He was certainly tired late in the fourth quarter when his snap count climbed above 25, but he's been through all this before. He'll get there sooner than later.
The only thing bothersome last week was the ability to convert on 3rd down. Was it timing, a missed block, or just being overpowered? Other than that, nearly perfect.
Yeah, the short-yardage failures on third down were definitely frustrating. They bothered LaFleur too. I don't think anyone got overpowered in those situations, but all it takes is one missed block and that type of play can be ruined.
National media, you know the click-bait types, have Jeff Hafley leaving at the end of this season. Am I correct in remembering when he came that he wanted a rest from the stress of a head coaching job?
I don't recall him ever saying that. I don't want to speak for him, but I would imagine he has aspirations to be a head coach again. You don't necessarily get to pick the time when that happens. More like the time picks you. We'll see what happens.
Guty is on fire with his pick ups, whole scouting team deserves props
Gutey is the first to admit it's a team effort when it comes to all the personnel moves. He's the final decision maker, but he gets input from a lot of trusted lieutenants.
Which works better to contain Daniels--less stunting to maintain pass rush lanes or maybe a spy linebacker? I assume we need to use both but how do you balance it out?
That's the ultimate questions. There are different strategies, and you want to change them up so the opposing QB won't always know what you're doing. But how much rush-lane integrity, how much spying, how much blitzing? All part of the game.
Josh Jacobs comments about being 8 for 8 on blitz pickups is awesome, this whole team vibe is so great to see
Jacobs and Chris Brooks were dynamite on blitz pickups vs. Detroit. It was truly a clinic.
Wasn't Parsons a linebacker in Dallas with the green dot?
He was the communicator in Dallas. I don't know for certain if he wore the green dot full time for four years. But he has done that job.
I read the II this morning and you've reminded me about Bears' last kick off to the Vikings with 2:02 left. Is it the fault of the HC or the kicker? I would think all kickers in the NFL can kick to the back of the end zone.
As I said, if there's any doubt, you have to kick it out of bounds there. Can't take the chance. Touchback vs. o/b is a difference of only 5 yards now. That was a no-brainer and the Bears blew it.
Do you have a gut feeling on Zach Tom and Aaron Banks for availability? Getting the win week 1 makes me think they will be extra cautious with extra rest now after too.
LaFleur said yesterday both would be given up until game time to see if they're ready, which means 90 minutes before kickoff when the inactives list has to be turned in. I would think that's a good sign, if they legitimately have a chance to play. Most important, neither injury is considered serious or long term.
Saw your comments about no longer doing WYMM, I loved those, but it had a great run. Your new one with the stats is really good also
Thanks. I'll see what I can do with that moving forward. Try to have some fun with numbers I guess.
Want to see more Savion Williams in the passing game. I have a feeling that he can be the guy.
He got the ball once on the push pass coming in motion, so they have plays for him. But there are a lot of mouths to feed in this offense.
Regarding Wooden's apparent ascent (as it seemed he was somewhat a forgotten man last season)... do you attribute it to any one of the following: 1) natural maturation/development, 2) (change in D-line) coaching, 3) (taking greater advantage of) opportunity... or simply a combination of all?
I'm sure it's some of everything. Hafley made the comment, last week I think, that he feels Wooden has gotten more comfortable playing at the higher weight after putting on some pounds since his rookie year. That has a lot to do with it I figure.
Objectively would you say the Commanders are a better team than Detroit at this point?
I have no earthly idea. Nobody does after just one game.
Is Washington really better against the run this year, or was that just the Giants?
That's the question I've been asking all week. I guess we'll find out.
Tomorrow is my birthday, can i get a win?
I have no objection.
What were your thoughts about the Monday night game, bears always find a way to lose, celeb accuracy is very in
They dominated a game for three quarters and couldn't finish it, and it was all three phases letting down. Offense couldn't do anything, defense fell apart, special teams missed a field goal. Full-scale collapse.
What happened to Emanuel Wilson? I didn't see him play much against Detroit? Number change threw me for a bit.
He got in at the end of the game, but the offense went with Brooks as the second back in the two-RB packages. The Packers also ran only about 45 plays in that game, which isn't a lot by the usual standard.
Whatever the Packers paid Daniel Whelan, it wasn't enough. A 66 yard punt with a 3 yard return? Crazy!
He keeps getting better and the Packers rewarded him with a new contract. As an undrafted player, he would've been a restricted free agent after this season (his third) so now they've avoided all that.
How limited is the playbook on a short week like this? Were there calls worked in last week but really meant for this week?
Teams definitely carry over portions of the plan on a short week, but they also draw on lots of stuff that was worked on during training camp. You aren't likely to throw any brand-new concepts in at times like these, but your game plan is specific to the opponent, so you don't just dust off last week's and change the name/date.
Lots of talk of Quay and Cooper flying around. How did Isaiah McDuffie do? I didn't notice
McDuffie only played 18 snaps on defense. They didn't have 3 LB on the field all that often.
How did Nazir Stackhouse perform in his limited snaps on Sunday?
No glaring issues as far as I could tell. He could be a key piece to the run defense as he settles in during this rookie season.
I may have missed it, but I don't remember Luke Musgrave even touching the ball. We need to sustain drives so people don't get rusty on the sidelines.
Musgrave was one of the 10 players who caught a pass in the game.
Saw LeRoy Butler break down some of the defensive plays last week. Seeing the communications and adjutments of players even during the plays were amazing. That thinking and adjustments, while you have a 300 lb guy in your face, or a blazing guy with track speed trying to break your ankles and beat them was astonishing.
The defensive coaches last week talked about how much they emphasize disguising scheme and coverages to hopefully throw the offense off by maybe just a tick or two. That takes smart players and a lot of communication to pull off.
Other than Scary Terry, Ertz and Deebo, does Washington have much top offensive talent?
The rookie running back Croskey-Merritt had a big game last week, and veteran back Austin Ekeler is a productive player, too.
What are your thoughts on the hit on Jordan Love after the interception that also injured Tom? Dirty play or just football?
The refs flagged it, so it was obviously unnecessary. Love was fine, but Tom getting hurt on the play was the real stinker of it.
Brooks might be the best blocking RB I have seen in GB and I watched the Packers since 1990. Do you know any good blocking RB in your time covering the Packers?
William Henderson and John Kuhn were both awfully good.
Thoughts on the season long captain picks?
They all seem like pretty good choices to me. I wasn't surprised by any of them, if that's what you're asking.
Did Jordan Morgan get any snaps at LT last week? I was surprised not to notice him rotate in at any point
Morgan was rotating with Sean Rhyan at RG until Banks left the game and then Morgan played LG.
Looking forward to a full plate of 8 tomorrow night. Feed him!
Yeah, I think Jacobs is a big key in this one. I'd like to see the Packers test whether Washington has really shored up a run defense that ranked 30th in the league last year.
Is Ty'Ron Hopper getting playing time?
Hopper played just one snap on defense Sunday. He played 15 snaps on ST.
Seeing the effort of Evan Williams on the pick, considering the distance he travelled, was quite impressive.
That was one of those great disguises with the coverage. Goff never thought Williams would be there.
Did you find it interesting Stackhouse got the nod over Warren Brinson this week? Any insights into whether this is opponent specific or his Stackhouse just ahead on the depth chart
Could be either at this point, but the first game without Clark may have made Stackhouse the bigger priority. Brinson was inactive.
I thought it was a great move by GB to extend CW for a year….
I agree. That's a win-win move for both player and team as far as I'm concerned.
One of Jayden Daniels' most admirable qualities is that he doesn't seem to get flustered. How do we break his spirit?
I don't think that's the goal, because he's not wired to have his spirit broken. Just plan on a 60-minute tussle and keep him playing from behind if possible.
Just saw the DEF player of the week, Cooper got robbed
JJ McCarthy got offensive player of the week for playing one good quarter, so I don't get too worked up about those awards honestly.
In your numbers crunching session, did you by chance find out what the visiting team win loss record is on TNF
I have not looked that up.
Were you surprised Watson got extended before Walker, Walker, or Romeo Doubs? Is it just a result of a cheaper price due to injuries?
Watson didn't get multiple years or top of the market money for his position. This was a different sort of extension.
Did the players have any voting of Captians or just MLF?
The players did the voting.
Bummed you missed Parson's sack?
Oh I saw it. I had just signed off on the live chat before it happened. I was working on something else at that moment.
I know Micah has had good success against Washington. Just have to wonder if he might have any insights as to the tendencies of their individual linemen he might be able to share to the rest of the line and linebackers. Do they talk about such things in their meetings, I wonder?
I'm sure they do.
Seems like I'm seeing more players wearing necklaces that are visible above their jersey/pads. The Vikings' Jefferson on MNF, for example, something like three beefy looking diamond necklaces. Could this be a safety hazard? Along with the trend on long hair, seems like a bad accident waiting to happen.
Not my thing so I don't really know. I do agree those items have become more noticeable lately.
Now that we kinda sorta know what a catch is, can we get some clarity on taunting? Some of the best athletes in the world paid to contact each other but are penalized for...talking?
It may not even be the talking so much as any gestures, like standing over a guy on the ground, that sort of thing. I guess we'll see.
I have not heard much about how our corner backs played vs the Lions. What was your impression of KN and CV?
The Lions didn't push the ball downfield at all, so that's a credit to the coverage holding up. It was dink and dunk and checkdown from Goff all day.
What do you think of Eagles' Carter getting to use the spitting game as his one game suspension just because he never played a down? To me, it should be the next game regardless because he did suit up and step on the field.
I don't know about any of this stuff, honestly. The league makes its decisions and we all move on.
The Green Bay Packers celebrated in the locker room at Lambeau Field after defeating the Lions on September 7, 2025.

John Kuhn's block on the Cobb TD against the Bears is one of my favorites! Even more meaninful after Peppers became a Packer. It's not often I remember a block, but that was one
Most definitely.
Does that extension put Doubs' future in question?
I don't know. There are (at least) 16 games left, and a lot can happen.
Are there any question marks on Jordan Love? Objectively, it's unfair for us to think he's Aaron Rodgers or Brett Favre, but I feel as though general sentiment is he has to live up to that? Last year he was hurt, the year before he had a strong second half, but we have not seen consistent strong play. Is this a make a break year for him with all the talent that surrounds this team?
It's not a make or break year. It's a year he has to continue showing progress, and good health would help provide a huge foundation to that. I thought he played a really strong game against Detroit. Perfect? No. But awfully good.
How did Kenny Clark look in Dallas ,better than Alexander in Balt?
Yes. Alexander was hurt for a good portion of training camp in Baltimore. He didn't look like he was ready to be out there in those types of situations. Just my opinion.
Didn't Goff's demeanor on Sunday remind you of his dismal showing in the Rams super bowl? He was spooked by something or somebody.
I don't know about spooked, but he definitely looked uncomfortable dealing with GB's pass rush, and I thought he was taking glances at Parsons specifically.
Are you going to partake in wearing white for tomorrow night's game?
I don't own any white pants. White shirt, sure.
Heard people questioning what we had to give up for Micah...but pretty straight forward to me....when you can turn a potential question mark into one of the strongest positions on your team, you do it in a heartbeat. Bottom line.
It's not that to me. When you can acquire a player on a Hall of Fame trajectory in his mid-20s, you're likely to get his best football. You do that any chance you can, because most teams don't let those players walk out the door.
Does Watson's new extension signal he'll be back sooner rather than later?
I don't think it says anything about his return timeline this year one way or the other.
I couldn't have been the only one at home who jumped out of my seat on that sack, even thought it was relatively meaningless as far as the game was going
It was a sight to see.
Faithful follower since the onset...I read and watch most content provided by yourself, Wes, and my personal favorite, the "Rock". Since the Parsons signing everyone seems to have a shine in their eyes, a smile on their face, and a spring in their step. Is the energy in the building as palpable as it seems???
These guys are fired up, but they know it takes focus and hard work. It's not some big birthday party every day in the locker room or anything. They know they can be really good, but they have to earn it.
Looking forward to the blog Thursday night, appreciate you doing it.
I'll be there. Funny, my computer crashed last Sunday, but it happened to do it at halftime so everything was fine as far as covering the game. Fingers crossed that wasn't some sign my computer is on its last legs.
Just a comment: When I surf to opposing team's NFL homepages to check them out, I further appreciate all the hard work your team does to populate Packers' homepage with all kinds of great content. Packers fans get A LOT more content (and better content, IMHO) than some others out there.
'Preciate you saying that. We have a great team of people here. I know Wes and I are the ones with our names on everything, but we work with a great group that help us out in immeasurable ways.
Any insights as to when Javon Bullard lines up as the safety opposite Xavier McKinney, vs the primary other safety in Evan Williams?
Could be opponent specific or matchup specific based on the opponent's personnel on a particular play. I'm sure there are reasons for everything.
Great to see Goff not have time and we didn't have to send extra guys to make him feel that way!
Exactly. It wasn't some sort of blitz fest. When you can rush 4, cover 7 and affect the QB, that puts the defense in a good spot.
Was Parson's not credited with a QB hit on the INT just because he let up? He could have still hit him some and not get called I think. Are Packers players instructed to not hit the QB at all if can help it?
Absolutely. You don't want to hit the QB if you can pull up, because if the officials feel you could've pulled up, they'll throw the flag.
Just watched all the coaches press conferences, a recurring phrase was "the best I've seen (around here)". Pretty strong praise for after Game 1 no?
Yes, but there indeed was a lot to like about that performance on both sides of the ball.
Goff had absolutely no time for third reads, often second, or barely first. On that interception, had he had time to read it better, it likely wouldn't have happened, but he had a rusher splitting the guard and center. A great rush like we had last week makes a world of difference.
Rush and coverage always go hand in hand.
Bears played one strong quarter. Just so happens, so did the Vikes. Minnesota's 4th Q trumped Chicago's 1st Q. Not too impressed with anyone besides the Pack in the North so far.
I have to admit, I didn't see the Bears D falling apart like that after the pick-six in the third quarter.
Non-football query here. Is your daughter slated for any more National Anthem performances?
Ha, no. She's not on the list this year.
I attribute our DL play to the absence of Kenny Clark. He had set an example for those young men since before they were ever drafted. I'm sure they made Kenny proud
I'd like to think so too.
TV announcers kept hyping Haf as a potential head coach. Can he leave GB at any time despite his contract?
Coaches can leave for other jobs as long as they're promotions. Position coach to coordinator, coordinator to head coach.
Thank you for the time today, Mike.
Thanks to everyone for the participation. I see I've actually gone past a full hour, so I'd better sign off. I'll be back on here Thursday night for the game. Enjoy it, folks. Take care.
