Packers not expecting Cole Madison ‘anytime soon’

GREEN BAY – Rookie offensive lineman Cole Madison is still dealing with a personal issue, and General Manager Brian Gutekunst said the team doesn’t expect him to report to Green Bay “anytime soon.”

Madison, a fifth-round draft pick out of Washington State, has been on the “did not report” list since the beginning of training camp. Gutekunst did not get into the details of his personal issue, but he does expect Madison to want to continue playing football. He’s also not ruling out Madison reporting to Green Bay at some point in 2018.

“When that issue is resolved, we’ll get back to the football part of it,” Gutekunst said. “We’re in constant communication and have full support for him at this time.”

If Madison does report at any point, he wouldn’t have to count against the 53-man roster right away. The Packers would have some time to make a roster decision.

As for the current roster, Head Coach Mike McCarthy said there are a handful of players who will be limited in practice on Monday, and a decision about their status for Thursday’s home preseason game against Pittsburgh won’t be made until Tuesday or Wednesday.

Right tackle Bryan Bulaga’s return to 11-on-11 work in Sunday’s practice was a significant step forward for him, and by all accounts it went well.

Left tackle David Bakhtiari’s rather speedy return to practice from a sprained ankle sustained on Family Night was another positive development.

“David is a warrior,” McCarthy said. “Nothing surprises me with him. David’s always going to do whatever he needs to do to get back on the field.”

Monday’s workout will be a “big practice,” according to McCarthy, after which the Packers will only have three public practices remaining in camp.

“There’s not much time. There’s not that much work left,” McCarthy said. “That’s why today’s practice is very important.”
