As quarterbacks coach with the Patriots in 2024, McCartney tutored Drake Maye, who became just the sixth rookie in team history to be selected to the Pro Bowl. Maye joined Dolphins QB Dan Marino as the only QBs since 1950 to register 500-plus passing yards and five-plus TD passes in their first two NFL starts. Maye appeared in 13 games with 12 starts, connecting on 225 of 338 passes (66.6 pct.) for 2,276 yards and 15 TDs with 10 INTs.

McCartney spent the previous four seasons with the Browns, tutoring the tight ends in 2022-23 and serving as an offensive assistant in 2020-21. In 2023, TE David Njoku posted career highs in receptions (81), receiving yards (882) and receiving TDs (six) on the way to earning Pro Bowl honors for the first time in his career. Njoku was one of only two TEs in the league (Lions TE Sam LaPorta) to register 80-plus catches, 850-plus receiving yards and six-plus receiving TDs in 2023 and became just the third Browns TE to hit those marks since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger (Ozzie Newsome, Jordan Cameron). Njoku ranked No. 4 in the NFL among TEs in receptions (139) and No. 5 in receiving yards (1,510) in 2022-23.

As an offensive assistant in 2021, McCartney was part of a staff that helped the Browns lead the NFL in rushing average (5.09), the top mark posted by Cleveland since 1966 (5.22). In his first season with the team in 2020, Cleveland registered 408 points, its second most in team history, and 48 scrimmage TDs, also the second-best total in club annals. McCartney worked closely with the QBs as Baker Mayfield's passer rating jumped from 78.8 in 2019 to 95.9 in 2020 and his INTs dropped from 21 to eight.

McCartney served as the QBs coach for the Broncos in 2019, where he helped Drew Lock finish with a 4-1 record as a starter, tied with John Elway for the most wins by a rookie QB in team history. After starter Joe Flacco was placed on injured reserve at midseason, McCartney worked with Lock and Brandon Allen, who both recorded wins in their first NFL start.

McCartney spent three seasons (2015, 2017-18) as an offensive assistant/quality control coach with the 49ers, helping San Francisco rank No. 10 in the NFL in passing offense (243.5 ypg) and tied for No. 5 in runs of 10-plus yards (113) from 2017-18. In 2016, he served as a graduate assistant/offensive assistant at Louisiana State and was part of a staff that helped the Tigers rank No. 3 in the nation in yards per carry (6.1 avg.) behind future NFL running backs Leonard Fournette, Derrius Guice and Darrel Williams.

McCartney's first NFL experience came with the Browns in 2014 as an offensive assistant, where he was part of a staff that helped Cleveland rank No. 4 in the NFL in rushing TDs with 17 after posting four in 2013. The 17 rushing TDs were the most by the Browns since 1986 and Cleveland was one of only two NFL teams in 2014 to feature three RBs with four-plus rushing TDs (Isaiah Crowell, Terrance West, Ben Tate).

McCartney's first coaching experience came in the collegiate ranks, serving as a graduate assistant/offensive assistant at LSU in 2011 and at Colorado in 2012-13. He played quarterback at LSU (2007-10) and was a member of the Tigers team that won a national championship in 2007.

McCartney was born April 24, 1989, in Boulder, Colo. His father, Sal Aunese, played quarterback at Colorado and his grandfather, Bill McCartney, is the winningest football coach in the University of Colorado history.
