Postcard from Hawaii: Scott Wells

Center Scott Wells is in Honolulu this week preparing for his first Pro Bowl appearance. He's one of seven Packers selected for the NFC squad.

On Wednesday, packers.com caught up with Wells, and he sends this "postcard" from Hawaii.

Tuesday was a long day. It started with getting up at 4:30 a.m., and we left from Nashville with our three kids, my wife, and her mom (to help with the kids) and flew to Atlanta, and then it was on to Honolulu, a 9½-hour flight. The kids did a good job on the plane, and we got here about 4 in the afternoon local time. We had a meeting at 7, which was 11 p.m. "my time," so after that I just went straight to sleep because I was exhausted.

This morning we had our first practice, and I got to meet some of the guys we'll be playing with. All seven of the Packers selected for the Pro Bowl are out here except John Kuhn, who is injured. I feel like a rookie right now, out here trying to figure out where everything is and what's going on.

Carolina's Ryan Kalil and I are the NFC centers, so we'll share duties during the game on Sunday. It looks like a very basic, simple game plan and playbook. It's my understanding the defense can't do anything exotic, so from an assignment standpoint, it should be fairly simple. Ryan and I are going to split quarters, but we haven't discussed the exact details on that yet.

The weather out here on the beach is great, as you would expect. My 8-year-old son is really excited about going to watch some people surf, so one afternoon we're going to drive up to the north shore and watch some surfers. He wants to see if he can try it. He'll probably stay close to the shore, but he might try. I'm not going to. I would like to try paddle-boarding, but that's about it.

The rest of the family is just excited to go hang out on the beach. On Monday after the game we're going to fly over to Maui and vacation there, just to relax, hang out and recuperate.

Basically I'm looking to have a good time, stay healthy and just enjoy this week and the whole experience. It's really an honor for me to be out here, to be with these guys and be considered to play in this game after eight years in the NFL.
