Single-high safety? Forget about it

Packers-Vikings has the right feel to it for me

Phil from Tampa, FL

Vic, I think the Packers-Vikings rivalry has been more pronounced in recent years than the other division rivalries. Can you think of any reason why this seems to be the case, or is it just me?

I can't think of any reason for it, but it's not just you because I feel the same way. I'm looking forward to Sunday's game.

Bill from Honesdale, PA

What are your thoughts on the exorbitant fines on Lynch for his lack of talking to the media? If we allegedly live in a land honoring freedom of speech, isn't there also a right to say nothing?

It's in his contract. He has a right to not sign it.

Daniel from Indianapolis, IN

Do you believe players should be forced to interact with media?

I do not. If they don't want to talk to me, I sure don't want to talk to them. That's not the issue. The issue is that by talking to the media, the player promotes the game and the league in which he plays; he cooperates with the employer that pays his salary. If every player in the league stopped talking to the media, they'd make the media's job much easier. The media wouldn't have to go to the locker room to get the players' spin on the game. The media would just stay up in the press box and put their spin on the game, which would likely be a lot harsher than what they would acquire in the locker room.

Paul from De Pere, WI

Vic, is the recent movement of personnel on/off our practice squad fairly typical? Seems like more activity than I have noticed previously.

I've noticed more movement of players on and off the Packers' practice squad. Injuries can cause that, but this team has been relatively injury free, compared to recent years. The practice squad is a tryout opportunity. You have to know the guys on the squad are worthy of development. It can be used to acquire information on multiple players, but once you have guys on it you like, the tendency is to stick with them and fit them into your future plans.

Steve from Liverpool, Nova Scotia

Who assessed Linsley in the Packers organization during this last draft? Best pick and you were right about not worrying when Smith left.

It begins with the area scout, passes on to the cross-checkers and then sits in the lap of Ted Thompson on draft day. This is a game of replacement. You must trust your team's personnel department to replace players that leave in free agency, because you can't keep your cap healthy by keeping everyone.

Kevin from Chicago, IL

Is Kurt Warner a Hall of Famer, in your opinion?

I think he's marginal. I like his story and the fact he played in three Super Bowls and won one of them, but the Hall of Fame is a place for dominant players, and it bothers me that Warner spent a large portion of his career as a backup. Dominant players don't do that.

Robert from Hesperia, CA

Do you think Aaron Rodgers will win MVP over J.J Watt?

I think Rodgers will win over Tom Brady.

Dan from Herriman, UT

Vic, if you were the opposing defensive coordinator, would you employ single-high safety against Rodgers?

No, never, ever. Maybe that's why Rodgers was smiling so much during the Eagles game.

Stuart from Madison, WI

I was wondering, for "Ask Vic Extra" is there any reason the score is 17-17 on the scoreboard?

I don't make graphics. Somebody did that completely on their own, but I like it and I think it fits for me for a couple of reasons: 1) I'm from the 20-17 generation. 2) I like close games. I would make one change: I would put one second remaining on the clock, which would suggest somebody is lining up a game-winning field goal. That's my kind of game.
